Furniture Care

With proper care, your furniture can last a lifetime.
The following furniture care is meant for maintenance and minor issues you might run into with your furniture. For more in depth information, contact the location nearest you, or you can email us your requests directly.
To protect your new
furniture, we suggest the following:
Maintenance for Cherry, Wenge, and Maple
For daily maintenance of these woods use a soft cloth, or even better a chamois, rinsed in cold or lukewarm water and thoroughly wrung out. Depending on use, the surface should be polished as much as once a month or as little as once a year. "Cavo" furniture polish is recommended. More dtailed information on Cavo is listed below. Follow the instructions on these products. Polish will clean as well as bring out the deep, beautiful color of the wood. Furniture oil is not recommended on these finishes, as the surface has been sealed.
Polyurethane Finish Care and Cleaning
Polyurethane varnishes are much more resistant to moisture and spills and moderate heat than traditional varnishes, and do not need as much protection. These pieces may be wiped off with a damp cloth, or washed with a sponge or cloth wrung out of sudsy water and rinsed with a damp sponge/cloth, and wiped dry.
Wood Furniture and Alcohol Stains
Alcohol stains are caused by spilled drinks and by many medicines, lotions, and perfumes. Since alcohol dissolves many finishes, it is important to react quickly. Wipe up the spill quickly and rub the spot vigorously with your palm or with a cloth dipped in a small amount of furniture polish.
Maintenance for Leather
Keep leather clean at all times using a slightly damp cloth. Some leather products can be cleaned with a leather cleaner/conditioner. This lotion should not be left on the leather to dry, but instead should be wiped off thoroughly with a dry, absorbent cloth. Check with your manufacturer or your dealer before using a cleaner/conditioner. Leather is a natural material and, as such, cannot be expected to be "perfect." Lines, scars and blemishes from healed wounds are to be expected. Such "imperfections" are considered to be hallmarks of fine, top grain leather. Each of our stores has many fine maintenance products available to help you preserve the beauty of your furniture. Please call or visit one of our stores for information on these products.
Mattress Care and Cleaning
Occasionally turn non-foam mattresses end for end, and turn over so former bottom side is on top. This will allow the mattress to wear more evenly. Covering the mattress will protect it from stain and soil and avoid having to clean it as described below. The cover should be washable, and easy to remove and put back on. Clean periodically to remove dust from the surface of your mattress and box springs with the upholstery attachment of your vacuum cleaner. If the mattress fabric does become soiled or stained, it can be cleaned with an upholstery shampoo, following directions exactly. Or use "dry suds", made by mixing mild detergent in warm water; apply only the "dry suds" to a small area at a time using a soft brush or sponge; wipe with sponge wrung out of warm water. Do not get padding inside mattress wet. Dry area completely before covering or using mattress. Drying is faster with either dry outdoor air (in warm weather) or dry heated air (in winter);an electric fan blowing across the dampened area hastens drying.
Metal Cleaning
Dust with dry or slightly- dampened cloth, or vacuum cleaner brush. If soiled, wash with cloth or sponge wrung out of mild-detergent (hand dishwashing liquid) and lukewarm water. Wipe with clean sponge or cloth wrung out of water. Wipe dry with cloth or paper towel to avoid water spots.
